Synthesis and Resolution Conclusion
In my proposal for synthesis and resolution, I set out to explore how playfulness, delicacy, order and chaos could come together to create a sense of lightness, I feel I have resolved this notion into two objects,my ‘Totems of Play’, this feels like a great achievement. I feel pleased that I completed most of the things that I set out to, including refining my glass blowing skills, working on a bigger scale and playing with the perceived materiality of an object. The two totems I have made aren’t technically perfect, in some places you can see the join where I have glued and glass and ceramic pieces together and there is condensation in the top part of the blue totem because it wasn’t bone dry when I attached the two. As much as these imperfections displease me, it gives me a clear viewpoint of what I need to focus on in my next body of work in order to refine my practice to the best of my ability. At the start of this unit, I also suggested that this body of work would exist to distract from the formality of the everyday. The work I have produced thus far has been sculptural installation work and I would argue that this isn’t distracting from the formality of the everydaybecause generally it would belong in a gallery, this again gives me a great starting point for unit X so that before the year is up, I can complete all that I have set out to do.
Unit X Proposal
For unit X, I propose that I will explore functionality. In order to complete the project, I feel I should stay true to my initial proposal and come full circle. I haven’t explored how the work I have made so far would fit in to the everyday, I know it would sit comfortably on a crisp, white background of a gallery but I think I need to challenge myself to look further than that. The inspiration and research for this project have at some points been quite personal, with references to my own childhood, so it does feel right to consider how my work would sit in a more intimate setting such as the home. During this unit, refinement is my focus, and my downfalls in the execution of the totems in my previous unit were mainly due to the size I was working at. I am going to reduce in size so that can properly execute each object.
I have thoroughly explored the perceived quality of materials through my process led development throughout synthesis and resolution. However, in Unit X I want to invite the viewer to do the same by introducing a view point made out of borosilicate glass in the form of a hanging mobile, bringing a stronger sense of delicacy into my final body of work.
My Unit X submission will consist of five porcelain and glass vases and a brass and borosilicate glass mobile that will come together as part of an installation.
